Brian Myers’ life took an extraordinary turn when he was saved by Sadie, the German Shepherd he had rescued just a few months earlier. Their reunion, following Myers’ discharge from the hospital, was an exceptionally emotional moment, filled with tears, joy, and a deep sense of gratitude. This heartfelt encounter highlighted the profound bond that had developed between them. The story of Myers and Sadie is not just about a rescue dog finding a home; it’s about a dog who heroically saved her owner’s life, proving that the love and loyalty of a pet can be life-changing.

Sadie, a 6-year-old German Shepherd, had a challenging start at the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge in New Jersey. She had been surrendered to the shelter and was visibly distressed. The staff found it difficult to place Sadie in a new home because she was particularly nervous around men and displayed defensive behavior.
“Sadie was a bit standoffish initially and seemed unsure of her new surroundings,” explained Heather Centrella, the front office manager at Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge. “She became somewhat withdrawn at the shelter, making it clear she needed an experienced and patient home.”
When Myers visited the shelter, it took him just 30 minutes to decide that he wanted to adopt Sadie. Despite her initial nervousness, the connection between them was instant and profound.
“Sadie jumped into my car, and we quickly formed a strong bond. The issues she was supposed to have with men seemed to melt away,” Myers said. “I was committed to giving her the home and love she deserved, and we worked through her challenges together.”
A few months after Sadie joined Myers’ home, an unexpected event turned their bond into a life-saving one. One evening, Myers suffered a stroke. He lost feeling on his left side and collapsed between his bed and the wall, unable to move.
“It was terrifying — I couldn’t get up, and I didn’t realize at that moment that I’d had a stroke,” Myers recalled. “My cellphone was on the dresser about 15 feet away, but there was no way I could get to it.”

Sensing something was terribly wrong, Sadie sprang into action. She licked Myers’ face, trying to revive him and refusing to leave his side. She barked continuously, hoping to attract the attention of neighbors or anyone nearby.
“She kept licking me and crying, so I reached up to pet her and grabbed her collar,” Myers recounted. What happened next was nothing short of a miracle.
Sadie, who had no formal training as a service dog, seemed to instinctively understand that her owner was in grave danger. Using all her strength, she managed to drag Myers across the room, bringing him closer to his phone.
“She wasn’t trained for this, but she sensed my distress and knew I was in trouble,” Myers said. “I don’t know how she did it, but she knew exactly what to do.”
Thanks to Sadie’s quick thinking and determination, Myers was able to reach his phone and call for help. When he arrived at the hospital, doctors informed him that Sadie had likely saved his life.
While Myers was hospitalized and later in rehabilitation, Sadie stayed with his family. Despite the physical distance, their bond remained strong. Myers and Sadie stayed connected through video calls, though it was clear that Sadie was confused and distressed by the separation.
“They do FaceTime, but Sadie gets confused and cries because she wants to be with her dad,” Centrella said. “He reassures her that he’s doing everything he can to get home to her as soon as possible.”

The day Myers and Sadie were finally reunited was filled with emotion. As Myers stepped through the door, Sadie leaped into his arms, covering his face with kisses. Tears streamed down Myers’ face as he held his beloved dog, grateful for the second chance at life she had given him.
Their story is a testament to the powerful bond between humans and their pets, and the extraordinary ways in which animals can impact our lives. Sadie, the once nervous and defensive German Shepherd, had become a hero and a symbol of hope and resilience.
Myers’ experience highlights the incredible potential of rescue animals. Despite her troubled past and initial challenges, Sadie found a loving home and, in turn, became a lifesaver. This story serves as a reminder of the profound impact that adopting a rescue pet can have, not just on the animal, but on the owner as well.
Now, as Myers continues his recovery, he is more determined than ever to give Sadie the best life possible. Their journey together is far from over, and they face the future with renewed strength and a bond that is unbreakable.
